Data volumes continue to grow unabated. Application performance demands continue to increase. IT leaders are under constant pressure to keep storage costs in check.
These challenges are driving more organizations to replace traditional disk storage with flash-based arrays. Flash storage delivers greater speed and more predictable service levels in a high-density medium that can reduce the storage footprint. Because of these benefits, IDC has forecast a 46 percent compound annual growth rate for all-flash arrays over the next five years.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is helping to accelerate the transition to the all-flash data center with innovative solutions that reduce the cost of flash capacity to as little as $1.50 per usable gigabyte. HPE’s 3PAR StoreServ product line includes enterprise-flash storage systems and affordable all-flash arrays that bring resilient Tier 1 flash to more use cases.
“HPE’s 3PAR StoreServ solutions feature flash optimization and data compaction technologies that drive down costs by increasing usable capacity,” McLane said. “At $1.50 per usable gigabyte, the cost of flash is now approaching that of 10K RPM SAS hard drives, creating a compelling value proposition for today’s data center.”
Midsize to Enterprise
For enterprise customers, the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 20000 storage system delivers industry-leading scale and density, consuming 85 percent less space than traditional high-end arrays and enabling customers to consolidate multiple racks of legacy storage while assuring quality of service. The all-flash 3PAR StoreServ 20850 scales up to 15PB of usable capacity and is capable of delivering more than 3.2 million IOPS at sub-millisecond latency and over 75GBps of sustained throughput. The 3PAR StoreServ 20840 uses the same hardware as the 20850 but also supports up to 1,920 hard-disk drives (HDDs). Other models scale to 6PB or 12PB of usable capacity, and all support up to eight controller nodes.
For customers looking for the most affordable way to accelerate applications and consolidate infrastructure, the HP 3PAR StoreServ 8000 family features a scale-out, quad-node design that includes all-flash configurations and converged-flash arrays that support expansion via HDDs. Sharing the same hardware acceleration as the enterprise-flash 20000 family, the 8000 delivers more than 20GBps of read bandwidth.
“All of these solutions feature the 3PAR Gen5 Thin Express ASIC for mixed-workload performance,” said McLane. “Organizations can consolidate 280TB of usable capacity into a single 2U drive chassis and 5.5PB onto a single floor tile, helping to prevent the flash-array sprawl caused by limited-capacity flash architectures.”
Data Protection and Native Federation
To support mission-critical applications, flash arrays must include built-in data availability and business continuity capabilities that reduce risk without performance penalty. HPE 3PAR Remote Copy support for asynchronous streaming enables replication while optimizing latency, distance and recovery. Especially suited for the all-flash data center, asynchronous streaming eliminates the overhead of synchronous replication while providing a near-exact data copy with recovery point objectives measured in seconds.
HPE StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central integrates 3PAR StoreServ primary storage with StoreOnce data protection solutions to accelerate and simplify backup. Automatic movement of data to StoreOnce is 17 times faster than traditional backup, with almost five times faster restore.
Enterprise data centers running a mix of legacy high-end and all-flash arrays with limited scale have been forced to knit together these silos with dedicated external SAN virtualization appliances placed directly in the data path. Native storage federation capabilities within HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 storage systems eliminate these added layers of cost, risk and complexity.
“HPE 3PAR Peer Motion support for non-disruptive, bidirectional data movement allows enterprises to create a storage federation, or an elastic resource pool, across multiple storage arrays with up to 60PB of aggregate usable capacity, capable of delivering over 10 million IOPS and 300GBps of bandwidth,” McLane said. “With a single click, workloads can move between members of a federation to dynamically rebalance storage resources for cost and performance optimization, rapid response to new business opportunities, and simple technology refreshes.”
The HP 3PAR operating system offers rich set of autonomic, Tier-1 data services spanning the entire HP 3PAR StoreServ storage family. For example, HP 3PAR Priority Optimization software provides simple, policy-driven templates that allow users to specify latency goals as low as 0.5 milliseconds. This level of hands-free, fine-grained Quality of Services ensures that administrators can deliver consistent service levels in environments where a large number of latency-sensitive applications are consolidated.
HPE’s 3PAR StoreServ solutions support unified block and file workloads as well as object access for cloud-developed application consolidation. For customers who are deploying flash over Fibre Channel, HPE SmartSAN reduces the number of steps required to provision a SAN by 80 percent. For service providers and midsize organizations looking to leverage Ethernet, HPE 3PAR StoreServ reduces iSCSI latency to assure flash-optimized performance while lowering storage network acquisition costs.
